HSTA-Retiree Ray Kottke is Feeling Betrayed – Letter to the Editor HTH

September 26, 2011

Feeling betrayed

We public workers enthusiastically supported, campaigned for, and believed in the progressive rhetoric of Gov. Neil Abercrombie. He told us we deserved respect, and he told us we deserved recognition, and he told us we deserved equality and decent compensation for years of hard work.

Less than a year later, I found myself standing with many of the other sign wavers who had stood fast for Abercrombie, again, holding a sign, but this time it was against the governor’s current policy decisions, actions, and non-progressive proposals.

He cut our health benefits, he refused to negotiate with teachers, he arbitrarily cut charter school funds more than other public schools, he advocated taxing pensions, and he did not propose any genuine way of generating revenue for the furtherance of progressive education or health care programs.

Either he doesn’t get it or we don’t. There are more people who need services, including children and seniors, more programs that help all of us help each other, and more willingness by the general public to provide such programs.

We do not need regressive programs — we need progressive and positive action.

When my wife and I wrote to Gov. Abercrombie asking about his recent actions, he ignored our correspondence. He did not even send a form letter. Nothing!

Thank you Ray for expressing your feelings.
I feel the same exact way.
It is so dishardening to write to some one you supported and go ignored.
I am so frustrated with our governor and feel so helpless.
I am glad we had the support of others when we waved signs in Aug.

You got what you paid for.
Now go home and vote for some more Democrats.
