Support Grows to demonstate against Abercrombie Visit

ILWU president supports protest of Abercrombie

I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore, became the rallying cry of pensioners attending a meeting at the ILWU Hall in Hilo today, July 25, 2011.

Representatives from various retirement unions came together to hear a variety of complaints against Governor Neil Abercrombie.

Abercrombie has gone on record as saying that he will renew his call for a pension tax and ending Medicare Plan B reimbursements in 2012.

I gave a speech reminding all that on August 1, 1938 some 200 brave workers picketed the docks in Hilo and was disbursed by 70 police officers in an anti union atmosphere.

That day is known as the Hilo Massacre.  Although no one died there were 50 injuries to those brave union representatives.

Today we face the same turmoil from our current Governor who has given every indication that he too is anti union by going after retirement benefits and in his failure to negotiate a contract with the teachers.

The Governor will be on the Big Island on Tuesday, August 2, giving speeches at three Hilo venues and we plan a protest at all three areas.

In a tribute to those heroic 200 that picketed the Hilo docks our retirees will meet on August 1st at 8 am at the ILWU Hall to make picket signs in preparation for the August 2nd protest.

We want to greet the governor at all three venues with a strong and loud message that we are opposed to his stance in cutting retirement benefits.

I am calling upon our HSTA retirees to come to the ILWU Hall on August 1st to help make signs and then come to one or more of the venues to protest the governor’s appearance.

We can no longer sit on our hands and let this growing anti union, anti retiree movement continue unabated.

support grows for protest

We must show unity and show support now or our failure to do so will only show the governor that we are weak and he will continue to trample on our needs.

I would like to see a hundred or more protestors at all three of the governor’s appearances in which the media will be notified.

We need to rally public support and let others know that we will not continue to be sheep led to slaughter.

I have received permission from our state president, Justin Wong, to wear our HSTA-R shirts and would like us to wear the Retired Teacher t-shirts.

Rae Yamanaka has already agreed to lend support, representing the actives, by wearing the HSTA shirt.

We must act now, before it is too late.    I am the one responsible for leading the rally cry of protest against this anti collective bargining governor.

Wayne “Big Dog” Joseph, president, HSTA-R, Hawai’i Island District

I would love to be there to support your cause.
Unfortunately timing is bad..its the first day back to work for us active teachers.
Is there anything else we can do to help with support?
I have already written to the governor for his stance on the DOE walkout on our negotiations.

We will be collecting signatures calling on the governor to change his attitude about retirees and active teachers. We are hoping to collect 400 or more signatures to hand to the governor when he visits the Big Island

    I’m an active teacher.
I wish our union would get behind you and shut our schools down!
No contract, No negotiation, No Work!
    What’s our governor doing?
I thought he supported us as we supported him?

Go Hilo! Stand strong! Fight for the right! There is strength in numbers! Help lead the way! The greedy will knock on everyone’s door.
