HSTA-R asked to co-host Oral History Project – Oct 1st, 2011

July 5, 2011

I recently received an email Jeanne Yagi asking for our help on the ‘Oral History’ project.  I ran it through the Council and most agree that we should help.  Let me know if you are interested in participating.

The following is Jeanne’s email message to me:

Coach Wayne,

This is to invite the Hilo Chapter of HSTA-R to be a co-host for the oral history workshop to be presented by Dr. Warren Nishimoto, director of the Center of Oral History at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, in Hilo on Saturday, October 1, 2011.

The workshop is designed to give participants an introduction to the skills and practices needed in order to record the life stories of our elders, to preserve their gifts for posterity by developing a written history, and certainly, to help us gain a deeper understanding of who we are.

Knowing that we can learn so many things from the people who go before us, we need to work to retain and tell the stories (the history) of the regular people who are the pioneers of our families, our churches, and our communities.

This workshop will help us to reach out into our community to strengthen our ability to record family histories and to work cooperatively with other community groups to achieve this end.

A number of individuals and organizations have been invited to co-host the workshop at the Church of the Holy Cross, Building of Faith, 440 West Lanikaula Street.

The Japanese Community Association of Hawaii, the Oral History Project of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, and the Hilo High School Key Club have already committed their support.

In addition to the Church of the Holy Cross, the UH-Hilo (College of Continuing Education and Community Service and the North Hawaii Education and Research Center), and other community, civic and business organizations are being approached to lend their support.

We will publicize your support of the Oral History workshop, and we need this kind of help from you as a co-host.

Publicity and promotion inviting participation by HSTA-R members, other HSTA-R chapters on the Big Island, and others in the community

Please review and discuss and let me know what questions you have.  News releases are being drafted, and we would like to include you as soon as you commit to sharing the task of getting the word out.

Thank you,    Jeanne Yagi

Editor’s note:  Jeanne is the director of the Positive Coaching Alliance, Hawai’i Chapter
