It’s incredible what an impact we, as teachers, can make not only on the lives of our students, but also on our community.   Fifteen years after my retirement, I am honored & humbled that the 20th Annual Business-Education Partnership Golf Tournament was dedicated to Esther Hughes and me as the original BEP teachers.

Since its humble beginnings in 1990, in two classes at Hilo & Waiakea High Schools, BEP has served over 17,000 students.

BEP is one of the BEST programs because it partners the schools with the businesses.  Instead of only teaching college knowledge for higher education, we incorporated lessons for “Hire” Education for employment & for life.  The businesses shared the skills, behaviors, competencies, and values that they wanted every graduate to have to succeed in the workplace & in society.

Our Partnership received national recognition from the National Alliance of Business & Scholastic, Inc. at the Business-Education Forum in Washington, D.C.

Funds raised are used for incentive awards given directly to the students for outstanding attendance, employment skills, attitudes & behaviors as well as academic achievements.  These rewards make “Ordinary Students do Extraordinary Things.”  A student who had 42 absences, achieved Perfect Attendance in BEP.  Another student with a 1.00 during her sophomore year graduated with a 3.3 GPA.

BEP also provides Grants to teachers for “seed money” for self-sustaining programs that encourage student entrepreneurship & achievement.

A BIG Mahalo to our sponsor, KTA Super Stores, and to all of the hole sponsors, prize donors, golfers, and volunteers who helped make our 20th Annual BEP Golf Tournament a tremendous success!!!
