Intoducing Council Member Joe Tanaka

Joe Tanaka also serves as our COLA rep.

   Joe Tanaka spent most of Department of Education career in high school counseling at Hilo & Waiakea.  

   “I had a short stint of 3 years at UHH in the student services department as Financial Aid Counselor,” he said.

   Tanaka is now in his 19th year of retirement.  Born and raised in Kona, “coffee farm boy”, he graduated from Konawaena High School.   Tanaka went to Florida Southern College and the University of Northern Iowa where he received his BA degree.

   Tanaka went on to get a Masters Degree in Teaching Social Studies and attended the University of Illinois.  He received his M Ed in Counseling at the University of Wyoming via NDEA Grant.    He entered the military: USAF, 3yrs-9 months, honorable discharge and he taught for five years before deciding upon counseling. 
  During his DOE career Tanaka was an HSTA and served in many capacities – field rep, in rep election, involved in union from start, 1 of 5 members of initial bargaining team, BOD, state VP, Spec. Services Committee Chair, Member Benefits Corp BOD Chair, Hilo Chap VP & Pres. NEA Convention Del. are the positions I can recall. 
  HSTA-R- HI District VP/Pres, BOD, COLA Fairness Committee Chair. HI Dist Council, Convention Del. 
  Interests: Public issues, Buddhism, sports, Gkids upbringing 
  For fun: reading good books and funnies in the paper, uke, fishing, exercise, travel 
  Best friend: Spouse Helen, “Worst” friends: 3 closest golfing buddies 
  life goal: To die of old age (trying hard) 
  Highest regarded human value: Fairness
